Master Cleanse: What Is It & Does It Work?

The Master Cleanse is a body cleanse program originally created by Stanley Burroughs, and recently popularised by Peter Glickman in his book "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days"

The nickname for this diet is appropriately, the Lemon Cleanse and the Maple Syrup Diet.

The master cleanser diet is based on a recipe made from:

1. Lemon juice - 1/2 a lemon

2. Grade B maple syrup - 2 teaspoons

3. Cayenne Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon or 10 drops of liquid cayenne

4. Filtered water - 10 ounces or 250 ml

This detox blend is drunk every 2 hours, and during the fast, no food is eaten.

But drinking plenty of water is recommended during the fast to avoid dehydration over the cleanse period.

Some people do this cleanse 2 days per month.

Some, if you can tolrate it, do the cleanse for a period of 10 days.

It is designed to help detox the body with ingredients that can be made from home.

With the maple syrup, grade B refers to the "dark amber, unrefined maple syrup with all many trace minerals." as opposed to the lighter grade A maple syrup. Also, in his book, Glickman recommends "search out and demand the kind not using formaldehyde. Maple Valley, in Wisconsin, does not use it. This is the kind I recommend."

Thhis cleanse may help to:

1. Detox from toxins in the bowel and from unhealthy foods

2. Help with weight loss

3. Improve energy

However, there are some concerns about fasts and cleanses which involve no food except for the liquid in the fast, include:

1. Lack sufficient nutrients and energy, and as a result cause headaches and dizziness during the fast

2. Lack protein, which if sustained for too many days may cause health problems

3. If in the presence of medical conditions, may need to consult with a physician first.

The other popular way, and possibly easier way, is to use a colon cleanse supplement in conjunction with a healthy diet.
